Advertising Changes

March 28, 2007

As you may have noticed we have been experimenting with advertising on swickis offering a range of alternatives. As part of this we are learning what is and is not working and as a result we are removing the Preferred Placement option for most swickis and refunding any money that advertisers have credited to their accounts. Watch out for more changes as we continue to experiment to work out the best way for your swickis to make money.

Has this anything to do with Google policy. I notice you don't show google ads in option 2 or 3. What is worse is that we got all of our ads in sidebars removed arbitrarily without previous notice. At least you could have said so. Now I have a bunch of channels in Adsense totally obsolete which make me go over each of them to erase them. I am willing to help you find other sources but keep an eye on your customers too. I don't think you will accept this comment but at least you will read it.

And please make clear what you mean by "most" swickis. The owners of many swickis or just the ones with ads. If this affects your policy you should admit the real reason in public, I think we will understand.

Grant Ryan:

Thanks for your comments Carlos and sorry for any problems this experimenting has caused. The add units in options 2 and 3 have been returned - the reasons for a global test are complicated and related to testing how page revenue changes with the number and type of adsense ads. The aim is to try to make swickis earn more money and in the future when we make changes like this we will email rather than post a notice on the blog. By “most” we mean almost all apart from some of our own swickis that we may continue to experiment on – it was clear to us that the Preferred Placement product is not ready for prime time primarily because swickis need to have a critical mass of users to make this type of product work.
